The Atari 2600 (also known as the Atari VCS) is a video game console released in September 1977 by Atari, Inc. It is credited with popularizing the use of game cartridges with game code and microprocessor-based hardware - allowing the user to play games that were not built directly into the console.
The Atari 2600 was retired 1 January 1992.
