The Draft Horse is a 1942 Merrie Melodies short directed by Chuck Jones.

Plot[]

A farmer's horse attempts to enlist in the U.S. Army, but he is rejected when he flunks the physical, despite his strong attitude about it. Dejected, he finds himself in a phony battlefield, which teaches him what war is really like. He decides to knit sweaters as a way to help fighting soldiers overseas.

Notes[]

  • This cartoon marked a new change in direction for Chuck Jones, where he eschewed the slow-paced, Disney-inspired style for which his earlier cartoons from the late-1930s and early-1940s have been known in favor of making fast-paced and more comedic cartoons like this one. It also marked the first time Chuck Jones directed a cartoon which uses World War II as its subject matter.
  • This is the last Merrie Melodies cartoon to have the 1940-42 fonts of "WARNER BROS." and "Present" before they change to a slightly different font, which would be used from 1942-47.
  • The scene where the horse is at the doctor and told to say "ah", only to scream, became an Internet meme in 2022.
