Saddle Silly is a 1941 Merrie Melodies short directed by Chuck Jones.

Plot[]

A Pony Express rider is sending mail in the Old West. The Phony Express operator sends in his lead horse to take over the messenger's old horse. Throughout the delivery, the rider comes across a hitchhiking Indian who tries to catch a ride on the horse, only to be swept out when his request is ignored.

The messenger winds up falling down a canyon into a pond and nearly skidding off a cliff. After arriving at an Indian territory, the rider has to contest against Moe Hican, an overwatching Indian who wants to get the letter. The messenger however gets cornered by an unfinished warpath, and has to take an alternate route to reach the destination, Fort V-8. When the rider gives out the message, it happens to be the hitchhiking Indian, who holds a sign stating "Thanks for the ride, bud."

Notes[]

  • This cartoon seldom airs on American television today due to the prominence of Native American stereotypes in the second half of the cartoon, although it has periodically aired on MeTV's Saturday Morning Cartoons and Sunday Night Cartoons blocks.
    • Although a restored version of the short was available on HBO Max in August 2020, it was one of the few to be pulled for the aforementioned reason.
