The Film Fan is a 1939 Looney Tunes short directed by Bob Clampett.

Plot[]

While on his way to the grocery store to pick up groceries for his mother, Porky stops by a sign that says that the local movie theater is having a "kids admitted free" day. Porky excitedly runs in and views various spoofs of things such as Newsreels, movie trailers, films, and also the Lone Ranger. The usher receives a telephone call that a boy disobeyed his mother by coming to the movies; he stops the show to announce that he'd better go home right now, and everybody dashes out, causing the theater to deflate.

The redrawn colorized version of this cartoon that aired on Nickelodeon was missing the brief scene of the on-screen news commentator identifying himself as Cold Promise.^[2]

Notes[]

The short was remade and inspired from the Merrie Melodies short "She Was an Acrobat's Daughter", with the similar premise of a character at a news movie theater finding the right spot to get a good view of the picture; some scenes from that cartoon were rotoscoped.
Porky's walk cycle where he flips a coin is recycled from "The Daffy Doc".
In the alcove outside the theater a poster advertises “Looney Tunes - The Supreme of the World”. Another poster advertises “Looney Tune Tonight”.
The screening begins with the words “Warmer Bros. Presents Looney Tone News” a play on “Warner Bros.”, and Fox Films’ “Movietone News.”. Later, “Vita-Tone News” is a reference to Vitaphone, the sound recording system used for Warner Bros. cartoons.
In a trailer for upcoming attractions the Masked Marvel refers to his horse as “Sterling”, a reference to the mask-wearing Lone Ranger and his trusty steed “Silver”.
