James Patton "Jack" King (4 November 1895 - 4 October 1958) was an American animator, best known for his work at Walt Disney Productions during the Golden Age of Animation.
History[]
King began his animation career in 1920 working at Bray Productions animation studio, where he directed a few Judge Rummy shorts. King would later join the Disney cartoon studio in 1929, animating a few of the early Silly Symphony shorts, most notably the Academy Award winning "Three Little Pigs".
In 1933, he moved to the newly formed Leon Schlesinger Productions for Warner Bros., initially working as an animator under director Earl Duvall. A year later, Duvall was fired in the wake of an alcohol-fueled argument with Schlesinger, and King was promoted to director. King was primarily responsible for most of the black-and-white Looney Tunes shorts at the time starring Buddy, and later Beans and Porky Pig. When Ben Hardaway was relinquished of his directing duties and Tex Avery was greenlit to direct the color Merrie Melodies cartoons, King became the sole director of the Looney Tunes shorts until 1936.
After two years working at the Schlesinger studio, King was invited back to Disney, which King accepted due to his frustration in being unable to direct any of the color shorts at the time. King's unit would be taken over by Frank Tashlin; King's old unit would not be able to direct color cartoons until a year later. Serving as one of Disney's key animation directors, he directed many of the Donald Duck cartoons in the Golden Age until his retirement in 1948. His last short that he completed before retiring was "The Trial of Donald Duck".
