Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 1 is a four-disc DVD box set that was released 28 October 2003 by Warner Home Video as part of the Golden Collection series. It contains 56 Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons. A handful of the post-1948 cartoons were derived from their 1998 Warner Bros. dubbed prints which fully restored and remastered the cartoons in standard definition, albeit without the dubbed notice at the end for each cartoon included on this DVD set; a total of 21 cartoons on the set are dubbed versions.

Menus[]

Overall Design[]

The DVD menus feature a simple art-style and are done in 2D animation. Each option is represented in an orange font resembling a thin cartoony Times New Roman that glows white and turns yellow when highlighted. Each menu has differently-colored backgrounds depending on the disc: baby blue on Disc 1, magenta on Disc 2, orange on Disc 3, and lime green on Disc 4. Each page has the available selections near the center of semi-transparent Color Rings, which start from either the left, right, or occasionally middle of the page. Directly underneath the selections is a button to take the viewer back to a previous menu in the form of an certain object: a carrot on Disc 1, an American football on Disc 2, and wooden mallets on Discs 3 & 4 (which additionally "slam" when an option is selected). Usually beside it are extra buttons as white text that navigate between the pages. A sign (the same kind as on the main menu of Discs 3 & 4) has the name of the current menu.

Near the selections is 90's stock artwork of the featured characters on Discs 1 & 2 and an assortment of them on Discs 3 & 4, often looking at, pointing, or motioning to the selections. Rarely in Disc 1 but more common in Discs 3 & 4 however, a character that does not appear in any of the included shorts is in one of the menus:

  • Disc 1 has Tweety on The Bugs Bunny Show features menu, and Henery Hawk on the languages menu.
  • Disc 3 has Daffy Duck on the main, Behind the Tunes, and as an outline on From the Vaults menus, Sylvester on the main, commentaries on the first page, as an outline on From the Vaults, and on the languages menu, both Foghorn Leghorn and Tweety on the main and music-only soundtracks menus, and Henery Hawk just on the main menu.
  • Disc 4 has Marvin the Martian on the main, features, and as an outline on From the Vaults menus, Road Runner on the main and language menus, Wile E. Coyote just on the main menu, and Pussyfoot just on the music-only soundtracks menu.

In place of the characters on the shorts menus, a pair of screenshots of the currently highlighted short are displayed on two frames of a filmstrip column. Highlighting a different option like the menu button will instead display stock artwork inside the frames of the featured characters or, in the case of Discs 3 & 4, the relevant characters of the shorts available on the page. Each short name may also have extra selections beside it that are explained on the first page of every shorts menu: a microphone for commentary on the short, a music-note for the music-only soundtrack of the short, or a miniature Looney Tunes logo for a Behind-the-Tunes featurette related to the short.

On the Bugs Bunny at the Movies menu on Disc 1, the options (save for the back button) appear in black on a projector screen with a black clapperboard icon beside them that turns red when they're highlighted. Bugs Bunny sits on a black director's chair while waving at the viewer.

When viewing the stills galleries, the menu is completely blank save for the current still crookedly hanged on the center of the screen.

If "Continue" is selected at the end of the Languages menu, an extra screen pops up with URLs for the then-current Looney Tunes and Warner Home Video websites, and copyright for the Looney Tunes franchise.

Main Menu Intro[]

Upon bypassing the Warner Home Video logo, the screen turns into the color of the Color Rings for the DVD. Then, the Color Rings themselves appear one by one from the center while the featured characters are drawn in by a pencil, painted by a brush, and occasionally erased slightly with the eraser of the same pencil. When the characters are almost fully-formed, the 1941 closing version of "Merrily We Roll Along" (with the "twang" from the 1941 opening version of "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down") plays as the Color Rings start to pulse in the background. The Looney Tunes logo bounces in from the top as "The" and "Golden Collection [Disc Number]" fade above and below it respectively. Finally, part of the bottom half is wiped off to make way for a black line with the options "Play All", "Shorts", "Features" and "Languages".

On the Looney Tunes Collection versions, "The" and "Golden Collection [Disc Number]" are replaced with simply "The" and "Collection".

Possibly due to a manufacturing defect, all known copies of Golden Collection Volume 1 have the same main menu audio as Disc 1, resulting in misplaced sounds. This also applies to reissues of these discs such as Looney Tunes Center Stage Volume 1 and Looney Tunes Center Stage Volume 2, but not reissues of the Looney Tunes Collection versions of the same discs.

  • On Disc 1, Bugs Bunny in his hole with his hand up is drawn. The pencil mistakenly draws Daffy's beak in place of his mouth, so after being colored in the beak is erased and his proper muzzle is drawn in. A carrot then flies in and lands on Bugs hand before the name of the disc's title pops up on it, then Bugs winks at the viewer.
  • On Disc 2, Daffy Duck is drawn with Porky Pig behind him with their pupils looking around before settling in place. The pencil mistakenly draws Bugs's ears on top of Daffy, so after being colored in the ears are erased. An American football spins in from the left and lands next to Porky before the name of the disc's title pops up on it.
  • On Disc 3, the following characters are drawn in different spots in order: Daffy Duck (hand behind his back and looking upward, same pose on Disc 2's menu), Porky Pig (running to the left), Bugs Bunny (laying on his back while smiling at the viewer), Sylvester (arms on hips with suspecting look to the right), Wile E. Coyote (kneeling up excitedly at the viewer with right hand pointing up- based on a pose he makes in "Beep, Beep"), Foghorn Leghorn with Henery Hawk (the latter on the former's right hand as if he's speaking to him), and Tweety (sitting and winking at the viewer). The brush paints them from left to right, and a sign with the disc's title fades in the center wobbling like a spring.
  • On Disc 4, the following characters are drawn from left to right in order: Bugs Bunny (looking as if he's whispering at the viewer- same pose he makes in the Additional Features menu on Disc 1), Marvin the Martian (arms open happily as he looks at the right), Road Runner (looking to the right while sticking his tongue), Wile E. Coyote (kneeling at the viewer grumpily- also based on a pose he makes in "Beep, Beep"), Tasmanian Devil (hands on knees smiling wide open), Elmer Fudd (hands on hips calmly smiling at the viewer), Granny (dancing happily with her eyes closed and left hand pointing up), Speedy Gonzales (striking a pose while smiling at the viewer), and Tweety (flying upwards while smiling). The brush paints them from left to right, and a sign with the disc's title fades in the center wobbling like a spring.

Main Menu Idle Loop[]

After the menu intro, the 1941 version of "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" plays as the Color Rings continue to pulsate in the background either inward, outward, or in different patterns before they all pulse at once on the final note. During this, the Looney Tunes logo above animates every few seconds with different wobbly sound effects- and in Discs 1 & 2, the featured characters change poses as well.

Below are the list of animations and poses for each disc, which the menu cycles through in order.

Disc 1[]

  • No animation, Bugs smiles at the viewer. Once the song ends, he winks.
  • Logo bounces forward and backward, Bugs tilts his head and grins smugly at the viewer.
  • Logo wobbles like a bowtie, Bugs stares at the carrot puzzled.
  • No animation, Bugs looks upward at the logo with a neutral expression.
  • Logo bounces forward and backward, Bugs leans his head back and grins smugly at the viewer.
  • Logo wobbles like a bowtie and bounces forward and backward at the same time, Bugs looks neutrally at the viewer.

Disc 2[]

  • No animation, Daffy looks up at the logo while Porky smiles at the viewer with his head slightly titled.
  • Logo bounces forward and backward, Daffy tilts his head up and looks at the viewer while Porky faces directly at the viewer and continues smiling.
  • Logo wobbles like a bowtie, Daffy stands to the right sheepishly pointing at Porky while he stands on the left, annoyed.
  • Logo bounces forward and backward, Daffy and Porky go back into their standard positions. Daffy smiles the viewer while Porky looks to the right with body facing left.
  • Logo wobbles like a bowtie and bounces forward and backward at the same time, Daffy stands to the right pointing at Porky accusatorially while he stands on the left, surprised with his back facing him.

Discs 3 & 4[]

  • Logo bounces forward and backward.
  • Logo stretches forward and backward with a fish-eye lens effect before bouncing back to normal.
  • Logo wobbles like a bowtie.
  • The name of the DVD on the sign bounces forward and backward.
  • Logo bounces forward and backward.
  • Logo spins clockwise rapidly, becoming a blur and zooming closer to the viewer while it does.
  • Logo wobbles like a bowtie and bounces forward and backward at the same time.

Notes[]

  • Golden Collection: Volume 1 is the only entry in the series to:
  • Some cartoons on Golden Collection: Volume 1 that use 1998 Dub Prints have some sort of DVNR.
  • On international release of Golden Collection: Volume 1, some special features, as well the main menu animations, were removed to make space for other audio language tracks.
  • The trailer for Golden Collection: Volume 1 erroneously features restored clips from "Rabbit Rampage" and "Hare Trimmed", despite both cartoons not being featured in the collection.
    • "Rabbit Rampage" would later be included as a bonus feature on Volume 6.
    • "Hare Trimmed" would not be included on any Golden Collection release; instead it would appear seven years later on the Looney Tunes Super Stars' Bugs Bunny: Hare Extraordinaire DVD.
    • The trailer also erroneously mentions "Games" as bonus features, even though none exist on any Golden Collection release, whether as DVD games or DVD-ROM games accessible on PCs. On the contrary, Disc 2 of Looney Tunes Spotlight Collection: Volume 1 includes DVD-ROM content from the Looney Tunes: Back in Action DVD.
      • Similarly, when the trailer was modified and reused for the international Looney Tunes Collection series, "Games" was changed to "Challenges" when still no such feature exists.
