Mighty Hunters is a 1940 Merrie Melodies short directed by Charles Jones.

Plot[]

Native American children are preparing for hunting, by dancing. The hunters, however, prove that they are no more than a threat to themselves. A duo of hunters attempt to catch a squirrel, but they fail. Another hunter attempts to get a donkey ride, but fails miserably. The worst part comes when one of the hunters gets the attention of a bear who wants his brother's candy. The hunters find themselves being chased off a cliff, and the bear gets the candy, and the hunters go home with nothing.

Notes[]

  • This is the only cartoon reissued before 1956 to keep its original title card but not the color rings. The 1945–55 shortened Merrie Melodies opening theme plays over the green/red color rings opening for this reissue. This is likely due to Jimmy Swinnerton's credit on the original title, which would be lost if replaced.
  • This cartoon is based on Jimmy Swinnerton's Canyon Kiddies stories, which appeared in Good Housekeeping Magazine from 1922 to 1941. It was also the original title of the cartoon, as seen in the model sheets.
  • This cartoon is unique for its oil-painted backgrounds, which were painted by Jimmy Swinnerton himself.
  • This cartoon rarely airs on American television due to heavy Native American stereotyping.
