Richard[1] Adams[2] Hogan (7 June 1913 - 28 January 1981) was an American storyman. He is best known for his work with Tex Avery at Warner Bros. and MGM.
Biography[]
Hogan was born in Buffalo, New York to John Martin and Florence L. (née Adams) Hogan on 7 June 1913. His dad was a customer service manager for Buffalo General Electric Co., active in the Knights of Columbus, and Secretary of the Buffalo Golf Club. He graduated from St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute and studied cartooning at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Afterwards, he joined Leon Schlesinger Productions to work as a writer. His first cartoon that he was credited for was Frank Tashlin's "The Major Lied 'Til Dawn" which was released in 1938. Most of the cartoons that he wrote were under the direction of Tex Avery and Chuck Jones after the latter's writer, Tedd Pierce, left for Max Fleischer's studio in Miami. One notable cartoon that he wrote was "A Wild Hare" which marked the debut of Bugs Bunny and earned an Academy Award nomination. He later joined the MGM cartoon studio where he reunited with Avery and wrote several of his cartoons including "Blitz Wolf" which was also nominated for an Academy Award. A few days after the aforementioned cartoon's release, Hogan enlisted in the army and was replaced by Heck Allen. He eventually returned in 1946 and later wrote cartoons such as “Bad Luck Blackie”, “Little Rural Riding Hood”, and “Magical Maestro". His animation career ended in 1950 after Avery took a sabbatical from the studio. He later moved into real estate and development business with Coldwell Banker.[2]
