Tom Dover, Dick Dover, and Larry Dover are Merrie Melodies characters created by Chuck Jones who appear in the 1942 short "The Dover Boys at Pimento University or the Rivals of Roquefort Hall". Tom and Larry were voiced by Tedd Pierce and Dick was voiced by Mel Blanc.[1]
Background[]
The Dover Boys are a trio of university students who attend Pimento University. Tom Dover is the oldest brother and the leader of the gang. Dick Dover is the middle brother of the gang, while Larry Dover is the youngest. They are parodies of the juvenile-fiction book series The Rover Boys.
In their debut short and their only appearance in the original cartoons, "The Dover Boys at Pimento University or the Rivals of Roquefort Hall", they are having a day out with their fiancée, Dora Standpipe, as they are being watched by the nefarious Dan Backslide.
Backslide steals a runabout placed next to the bar he's in, which he uses to kidnap Dora and take her to a mountain cabin. Dora gives him a beating while crying and pounding on the door, causing Backslide to call for help from the Dover Boys.
As they arrive, they start punching Backslide and demanding he unhand her until they knock themselves out as Backslide collapses. Dora then walks off with the Old Navy Man.
The Dover Boys later reappear in the Animaniacs episodes "Frontier Slappy" and "Magic Time".
