The Egg Collector is a 1940 Merrie Melodies short directed by Chuck Jones.
Plot[]
Sniffles reads a book about egg collecting. The book says that the egg of the great barn owl is a good specimen for beginners, and the barn owl is harmless. However, it feeds mainly on small rodents. Unaware of what a rodent actually is, Sniffles and his friend the bookworm go in search of an egg. The pair travel to a church hoping to obtain one from a barn owl. They find an egg, which then hatches. They then meet the father owl, who informs them that Sniffles is a rodent, and owls also eat worms. The father owl then becomes distracted doting over his newly hatched offspring, allowing Sniffles and pal to make a hasty retreat.

Notes[]
- As late as 2008, a 35mm print of this short with its original titles was known to exist.[3]
- In the book, The Encyclopedia of Animated Cartoons this short is erroneously stated to have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in both the Sniffles character description and the Sniffles filmography (although the Academy Award appendix later in the book does not list the short).
