The Good Egg is a 1939 Merrie Melodies short directed by Chuck Jones.

Title[]

The title has a double meaning; a "good egg" can refer to someone who is likeable, and in the context of the short is taken literally as the short features eggs.

Plot[]

A hen with no chicks adopts an egg she mistakenly believes to be a chicken, but it hatches into a turtle. Naturally, the turtle does not fit in nicely with the baby chicks. The turtle becomes the butt of jokes for the chicks, until several chicks start to drown in a makeshift boat. The turtle saves the day and is even given the role of "life guard" on the boat.

The European Turner "dubbed" version print uses the 1941–55 rendition of "Merrily We Roll Along", while the American Turner print keeps the original ending rendition.
- Since the restoration aired on MeTV uses the European Turner print's soundtrack, the error persists in that version.
The original title sequence had the song "(Ho-dle-ay) Start the Day Right" playing over it. Its soundtrack recording is available on The Carl Stalling Project album.^[4]
This is the first Chuck Jones-directed cartoon to feature an ACME product (in this case, an ACME Toaster).
MeTV aired a previously unreleased restored print of the cartoon on Saturday Morning Cartoons.
