VHS series title card

The Looney Tunes Video Show was the first Looney Tunes home video collection.[1] Nineteen volumes were released.

Each videotape features seven cartoons (ten cartoons for the PAL-exclusive Volumes 8-19) arranged in no particular order or theme, and opens with a plain, static version of The Looney Tunes Video Show title card with the 1955-1964 Merrie Melodies opening music playing over it.

The Looney Tunes Video Show offers a wider range of post-48 cartoons shorts, ranging from 1948 to 1969. This is the only Looney Tunes VHS collection to include cartoon shorts from the lesser-known DFE (1964-1967) and WB-7A (1967-1969) eras, until the Bugs and Friends European VHS tapes came out in 1997, even though very few cartoons from both eras were selected for this VHS collection. The quality of the prints in each tape is inferior to that of later VHS releases.

Volumes

First batch: Volumes 1-7

These are the very first batch of The Looney Tunes Video Show VHS volumes. There are seven volumes in total released in this batch, even though only Volumes 1-3 released in November 1982 were made available in the United States, while Volumes 4-7 never saw a US release; only in Canada and other countries. [2] All seven volumes were released in the UK in January 1983[3].

The prints used in this first batch exist in both NTSC and PAL formats, much like most of the later video transfers.

Each tape has a total of seven cartoons per volume.

Second batch: Volumes 8-13

While The Looney Tunes Video Show ended after Volume 7 elsewhere (particularly in Canada), over in the UK and other European PAL countries this VHS series is renewed for an additional 6 more volumes in January 1984[3], complete with an increase from seven cartoons per tape volume to ten cartoons per tape volume.

Due to this batch's more limited availability in only the PAL regions, the video transfers made for this second batch only exist in PAL format due to them originally mastered in 576p resolution, and therefore there is a slight difference in picture quality from the transfers used in the first batch, even though the quality of the prints in this batch are still inferior.

Unlike Volumes 1-7, The Looney Tunes Video Show opening title card is not used at all. [4]

Third batch: Volumes 14-19

The Looney Tunes Video Show was renewed and ended with 6 additional volumes released in August 1984[3] in the UK and other countries.

Like Volumes 8-13 preceding it, each tape had a total of ten cartoons per volume and the video transfers made for this third batch only exist in PAL format due to them originally mastered in 576p resolution.

Notes

  • The cartoons appearing on The Looney Tunes Video Show volumes 8-19 exist only in PAL format unlike volumes 1-7 where the cartoons exist in both NTSC and PAL formats, due to them originally mastered in 576p resolution.
  • Most of these cartoons from this video collection (along with cartoons coming from the Golden Jubilee VHS tapes) are time-compressed to PAL speed when shown on Cartoon Network/Boomerang in USA (despite being in NTSC countries) for some reason. Perhaps it was for time or the fact that they were originally transferred from PAL master tapes available at the time Cartoon Network started showing these cartoons.
  • Certain bundles would later be bundled again into certain PAL Special Bumper Collections. For example, volumes 15, 16 and 18 were bundled together on Volume 3 of the PAL Bumper Collection and volumes 7 to 9 were bundled together on Volume 1 of the PAL Bumper Collection.
