Those Were Wonderful Days is a 1934 Merrie Melodies short directed by Bernard B. Brown.

Plot[]

In a nostalgic look at America at the turn of the 20th century, the citizens are enjoying their day. At a saloon, a quartet sings the titular song, and a woman on a poster, the cashier, and the piano join them. The life of the city includes boxing matches, free lunch tables where a man sets his dish atop of a woman's hat as they are walking, barbershops, and a gala picnic.

At the picnic, people are drinking beer, driving in a parade, and doing high dives on a diving board. At a picnic ground, a mustached villain spots a lady and uses a stick of dynamite to launch her man into the air and land on the seesaw. The villain kidnaps the lady and flees in a hot air balloon. The man uses a cannon to launch himself up to the villain and the two have a fisticuffs battle. After the balloon explodes like a grenade, the man is able to save his wife and glide down to the villain. The man gives the villain a final beating, but the lady also bops her husband in the head with a mallet, as she surprisingly finds a newfound interest in the villain.

Notes[]

  • Much like "Pettin' in the Park", Bernard Brown's credit as director is somewhat unusual considering that he was the musical director at the time. It is believed by some historians that the actual director of this cartoon was Frank Tashlin, who had joined the studio for a brief period in 1933–34 before leaving for the Ub Iwerks studio and, later, the Hal Roach studio.[3] He would later return to WB in 1936.
  • MeTV aired a previously unreleased restored print of this cartoon on Toon In With Me with the original ending card.
