(I originally posted these on our Porky Pig 101 thread, but for the sake of making it easier to find, I'm moving it here.)
I am very happy to report that I received my copy of Porky Pig 101 today (the pressed version!). I've only been able to skim through the set, but I have noticed a few minor flaws with it (likely the result of using interpositives instead of the original negatives). There was talk about certain scenes cut (such as "Porky the Wrestler" and "Porky's Movie Mystery"), which will also be addressed below.
It is important to stress that none of this means that you shouldn't buy the set! I just want to spread information.
- "Fish Tales" does not begin with the shield zooming in and still has "The Merry-go-Round Broke Down" over its opening titles, and
an abrupt skip in the music track from the opening card cue to the iris-out when Porky is carrying the fishing rod.the wrong opening music cue. - "Westward Whoa" has a strange editing error as well: it begins with the 1939-1940 variant of "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" but segways into the title card music before it finishes! (note the difference in audio quality)
- Near the very end of "Shanghaied Shipmates", where the crew is whipping the villain swimming in the ocean, I noticed two glitchy frames where random squares are on the screen.
I don't know if I got a bad disc or not, since my disc had absolutely no scratches. At first, I thought I simply had a bad disc, but others have reported this issue as well. - "Porky the Wrestler" still has that abrupt cut (see "Censorship"). The edit is clearly physical.
- "Picador Porky" not only starts with the 1939-1940 theme, the opening music cue is plastered over with the one from "Porky's Tire Trouble"! It also ends with the 1939-1940 end theme, but the original titles (so you hear "t-t-t-that's all folks!" but don't see Porky!).
- "Porky's Garden" not only starts with the 1939-1940 theme, the opening music cue is plastered over with the one from "Porky's Tire Trouble"! It also ends with the 1939-1940 end theme, but the original titles (so you hear "t-t-t-that's all folks!" but don't see Porky!).
- "The Lone Stranger and Porky" succumbs to the plastered music cues from "Porky's Tire Trouble".
- "Porky's Movie Mystery" still has that abrupt cut (see "Censorship").
- "Porky the Giant Killer" succumbs to the plastered music cues from "Porky's Tire Trouble".
- "Naughty Neighbors" - "Porky's Tire Trouble" music is looped over the title card--twice! Not only that, but the resulting edit overwrites the start of the cartoon's soundtrack! The correct soundtrack doesn't kick in until 0:40.
- "Porky's Tire Trouble" has the same strange pixels that "Shanghaied Shipmates" had; "Tire Trouble" has them around 3:07 where Flat Foot Flookey is walking across the platform.[1]
- Apparently, "Patient Porky" uses an unrestored transfer instead of the restored one on GC VOL 5.
- "Porky's Hired Hand" also has the opening music cues from "Porky's Tire Trouble" plastered over the opening titles.
- "Porky's Midnight Matinee" uses the 1937 "Porky Signature" theme.
- "Notes to You" uses the 1939-1940 variant of "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down".
- "Robinson Crusoe Jr." uses the 1937 "Porky Signature" theme.
- "Confusions of a Nutzy Spy" ends with the 1936-1937 Looney Tunes closing title with the 1937-1938 ending theme playing over it ("T-t-t-that's all Folks!" is cut out)
- "Porky's Ant" uses the 1937 "Porky Signature" theme.
- "Porky's Cafe" uses the 1937 "Porky Signature" theme.
- "Porky's Prize Pony" starts off with the 1939-1940 opening theme before cutting to the 1941 one.
There's also a slight bit of cropping going on with some of the new video transfers. It's nothing major, but bits of text at the edges of the screen are ever-so-slightly cropped off. You can see what I mean with the title card of "It's an Ill Wind". Note that the edges of the quote marks are slightly cut off.
